Robotic Knife-fish Takes to the Water!

"A robot with an unusual swimming style is doing laps in a pool at the University of Bath in the UK.

Gymnobot is powered by a single fin that runs the length of its body. Waves rippling along the fin generate thrust, a mode of propulsion borrowed from the freshwater knife fish of South America.

"This form of propulsion is potentially much more efficient than a conventional propeller and is easier to control in shallow water near the shore," says William Megill, an engineer with an interest in biomimetic designs working with colleagues on the project."
